Solid additives based on dispersed state can lead to the more efficient use of lubricants. On this basis, a facile and novel method was developed in this work to enhance the lubrication properties of organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) grease by utilizing a MoS 2/OMMT composite as a thickener. In contrast to conventional mechanically mixed grease, the incorporation of MoS 2 in composite form not only enhances the stability of the colloidal structure but also contributes to superior lubrication. Specifically, the MoS 2/OMMT grease exhibited improvements of 68% in anti-friction performance, 83% in anti-wear performance, and 167% in extreme pressure performance compared to traditional mechanically mixed greases. These enhancements were attributed to the use of MoS 2/OMMT as a thickener, effectively preventing MoS 2 agglomeration within the grease. The synergistic interaction between MoS 2 and OMMT uniform tribofilm is crucial for the superior tribological performance of the MoS 2/OMMT grease and enables it to surpass both pure OMMT grease and mechanically mixed grease. These findings suggest that the MoS 2/OMMT composite as a thickener holds promise for demanding industrial applications.
