Ceramic reinforcements enhanced tribological properties of CrFeNiAl0.3Ti0.3 high-entropy alloy-matrix self-lubricating coatings

This study systematically investigated the effects of Al 2O 3, ZrB 2, and SiC ceramic particle reinforcements on the properties of detonation-sprayed CrFeNiAl 0.3Ti 0.3-Ag/(Ca, Ba)F 2 high-entropy alloy (HEA) matrix self-lubricating coatings. Results demonstrated that the ceramic reinforcements significantly enhanced coating hardness through grain refinement and dislocation pinning. Among the tested compositions, the Al 2O 3-reinforced coating exhibited the lowest wear rate, ranging from 0.82 × 10 -5 to 0.87 × 10 -5 mm 3/Nm at 800 ~ 1000 ℃, attributed to the formation of a dense, protective glaze layer. This wear rate was an order of magnitude lower than those of the ZrB 2- and SiC-reinforced coatings. In contrast, the ZrB 2-reinforced coating was susceptible to glaze layer cracking, resulting in a substantial increase in wear rate (49.36 × 10 -5 mm 3/Nm) at 1000 ℃. Meanwhile, the SiC-reinforced coating experienced pore formation due to SiO 2 generation, leading to a significant deterioration in wear resistance. This work confirmed that Al 2O 3 exhibited optimal compatibility with both the HEA matrix and the lubricating phase, facilitating the formation of a dual glaze layer structure that synergistically enhanced tribological performance across a broad temperature range. These findings provide critical insights for designing high-performance self-lubricating coatings for extreme conditions.
